Description:The Director of Development is an essential member of the Office of the President, and a key participant in the NatureServe Executive Team. The Director of Development leads the growth and implementation of NatureServe�s overall philanthropic strategy, guides donor cultivation priorities, and assists the CEO and other senior staff in developing high-level donor relationships consistent with the organization�s Strategic Plan. A particular focus will be expanding private and philanthropic support for the organization�s activities both domestically and internationally to at least $5M per year.

The Director of Development works closely and collaboratively with other members of the Executive Team, developing a thorough knowledge of NatureServe�s products and services so that s/he can secure donations supporting mission critical activities. The Director of Development and the Director of Marketing and Communications work as a team with the CEO to identify key external audiences and develop messages for each audience.

The Director of Development supervises a fundraising assistant and provides leadership as needed to cross-divisional teams.
Duties:1. Advance and sustain a fundraising strategy consistent with NatureServe�s mission, values, and strategic objectives.
2. Develop a comprehensive fundraising plan with annual targets for implementation.
3. Support and advise the CEO, the Board of Directors, and other senior staff on cultivation and solicitation of major donor prospects, and take the lead on selected donors.
4. Foster a culture of collaboration with other senior staff in the coordination of fundraising activities.
5. Research and oversee cultivation and solicitation strategies for the most promising individual, foundation, and corporate giving prospects, with an emphasis on generating unrestricted support.
6. Direct the creation of a highly effective donor recognition program.
7. Research and review letters of inquiry, grant proposals, and donor reports. Take the lead in writing and submitting selected proposals, especially for unrestricted, annual support and corporate sponsorships.
8. Coordinate the planning and execution of fundraising-oriented special events.
9. Report to the CEO and the Board of Directors on fundraising targets, and keep managers abreast of important fundraising or reporting deadlines.
10. Supervise staff and manage budgets related to the administration of the fundraising team.
11. Recommend fundraising policies and procedures, and ensure ethical compliance, as defined by the Association for Fundraising Professionals.

Qualifications:REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Proven track record in fundraising for non-profit organizations, including organizational promotion responsibilities. Must include experience researching, writing and reviewing proposals.
2. Bachelor�s degree in communications, marketing, and five years of related work experience or 10 years of equivalent experience�including at least 2 years at a supervisory and management level.
3. Personal commitment to NatureServe�s mission is essential.
4. Knowledge of current trends in charitable giving.
5. Exceptional interpersonal communication skills, energy, and enthusiasm with the ability to build long-term relationships. These skills include superior oral and written persuasion skills, effective listening, and discretion.
6. Supervisory experience must include managing staff, budgeting, program planning, and other administrative responsibilities.
7. A team player and person of unquestioned character and personal integrity. Ability to organize teams of individuals from different programs who are not under his/her direct supervision, and motivate and lead them in successfully completing fundraising goals.
8. Ability and willingness to travel on short notice.

PREFERRED SKILLS:
1. Experience fundraising for conservation or science-based organizations.
2. Experience working with Board of Directors of non-profit organizations, including the ability to present fundraising performance information.
3. Experience securing funds for work outside the U.S.
4. Ability to speak and write in Spanish.

ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. Ability to travel independently to attend meetings with donors, prospects, and other business partners.
2. Ability to effectively converse verbally and in writing with others regarding organizational mission, products and services.
3. Ability to maintain a regular, full-time work schedule so as to be available to interact with donors, prospects, other business partners, and staff teams during normal working hours.
