| Location: | Arlington, VA | | Exempt/Non-Exempt: | Exempt | | Employment Type: | Full Time | | Department: | Marketing & Communications | | Description: | The Communications Specialist works as part of a team to �tell NatureServe�s story� through the development of content for NatureServe�s outreach materials and social media, while also providing guidance and support to a broad cross-section of NatureServe staff and member programs engaged in business development, fundraising and outreach. As needed, the position will also support the design and publication of project-specific reports and online promotion of project results.
The position�s primary organizational contributions are to increase awareness and understanding of NatureServe, promote NatureServe�s market-led tools and services, enhance the identity of the NatureServe network, and recruit long-term constituents. Key audiences for the Communications Specialist�s products include users of NatureServe�s products and services, existing and potential donors, network members, partner organizations, policy-makers, natural resource managers, professional and citizen scientists.
This position reports to the President & CEO, and works collaboratively with staff throughout NatureServe on various communications and marketing initiatives. The Communications Specialist does not supervise other staff.
| | Duties: | 1. Tell NatureServe�s story by writing, editing, and producing materials such as fact sheets, annual reports, posters, and displays, using professional desktop publishing tools. Regularly seek audience feedback to guide future, segment-specific message development.
2. Update the NatureServe�s websites with news, announcements, graphics and images that enhance understanding of NatureServe�s brand, promote its accomplishments, and provide an engaging user experience. Monitor and report on website usage, and lead efforts to improve user engagement.
3. Maintain a steady flow of news about NatureServe through social and traditional media outlets. Monitor usage and lead efforts to increase NatureServe�s media presence.
4. Work collaboratively with staff throughout the organization to keep abreast of organizational achievements, and engage project leads in producing new content for all media outlets. Work with members of the NatureServe network to develop co-branded products.
5. Guide staff in maintaining a consistent brand identity for NatureServe by maintaining a style guide and �communications toolkit� (e.g., an accessible archive communications resources). Train staff and members of the NatureServe network to use these resources effectively and improve their marketing skills.
6. Maintain a constituent relationship management (CRM) system to consolidate intelligence on our client, partner and donor relationships. Build organizational capacity to use this information in results-driven marketing, outreach and communications.
7. Research, write, and produce the monthly email newsletter for network staff. Assist as needed in the development, production, and delivery of other NatureServe print and electronic newsletters.
8. Work as needed with project managers to edit, design, and produce NatureServe project-related publications, both print and online.
9. Promote and support on-site communications needs for the Biodiversity Without Boundaries (BWB) annual conference. Participate in event planning activities as part of the BWB Team.

| | Qualifications: | �Bachelor�s degree in a field such as communications, marketing, or a related area.
�At least five years of experience in a combination of online, print and social media production.
�Experience working with content management systems (especially Drupal), constituent relationship management systems, and list management tools and services.
�Managing a constituent relationship management system (especially CiviCRM)
�Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, particularly InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop. Ability to design publications, user interfaces, and graphics.
�Producing printed materials, especially working with graphic designers and printers.
REQUIRED SKILLS
�Outstanding skills in writing, research, and editing. Ability to translate scientific information into engaging, persuasive prose and to listen effectively.
�Excellent skills in the Microsoft Office suite of tools, especially Word and PowerPoint.
�Exceptional attention to detail, especially as to editorial style, grammar, and visual design.
�Focus on meeting deadlines while juggling multiple tasks.
�Service orientation; commitment to providing high-quality support to NatureServe staff and network members.
�Excellent oral and written communication skills, public speaking and presentation skills, effective listening, diplomacy, and tact.
�Personal commitment to environmental conservation.
�Demonstrated ability to think �out of the box� to increase organizational visibility.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS
�Work in non-profit organizations.
�Fluency in Spanish.
�Demonstrated experience communicating science to non-scientists including clients, funders, media, and politicians.
�Event planning and communications, either conferences or special events.
�Developing communications and marketing materials for both U.S. and international markets.
�Understanding of and familiarity with issues related to biodiversity conservation and science.
